Bart Decrem, CEO of the application developer Tapulous, told an audience at VentureBeat's MobileBeat conference how the company's TapTap Revenge game became the most popular free app in the new iPhone app store.

A head start helps. The company began developing the game in March, months before Apple made its iPhone SDK available.

Working with hackers who had jailbroke the first version of the iPhone, the company made the game available for download before the iPhone apps store even opened for business.

Whether that head start will be enough to keep the game on top of the heap is something even Decrem sounded skeptical about.

Here's what Fred Wilson had to say about it earlier.
