“your average cotton product is only 73% cotton even though it says 100%, the rest is pesticides or chemicals like Formaldehyde, which is used to prevent shrinking.” --Yvon Chouinard

Hi Gary, Yvon Chiounard, the founder of Patagonia - one of the front runners in organic and sustainable clothing, was quoted saying that conventional cotton fabric is 73% cotton, 27% pesticidal and chemical residue. Let me locate the exact link to the taping of that and get back to you. other links that you might find interesting are: <a target='_blank' href=' http://www.panna.org/documents/conventionalCotton.dv.html '>["http://www.pann...</a> "The problems with clothing production don’t stop in the field. During the conversion of conventional cotton into clothing, numerous toxic chemicals are added at each stage— silicone waxes, harsh petroleum scours, softeners, heavy metals, flame and soil retardants, ammonia, and formaldehyde— to name just a few." --http://www.ecochoices.com/1/cotton_statistics.html "The average 100% cotton T-shirt contains only 73% cotton. The rest is made up of chemicals and resins that were used to grow and make it. Yet, we all think cotton is one of the most natural things around. The truth is, it's not as nice as we'd all like to think. " --http://www.howies.co.uk/content.php?xId=1 "Studies have estimated the human impact from pesticides used on cotton to be as high as 20,000 people killed and 3 million poisoned every year (IISD/WWF 1997). In addition to direct contamination in fields, people are also affected through water runoff, drift of sprayed mist, the use of empty pesticide containers for other purposes, and inadequate or illegal disposal of expired or unused pesticides (Banuri 1999)." --http://www.blessedearth.com.au/organic-information

Our clothes are 100% organic cotton. A piece of clothing that is 100% conventional cotton is actually only 73% cotton, 27% pesticide residue. Organic Cotton clothing is 100% cotton, 0% chemical/pesticide residue. I don't know about you, but the idea of wearing clothes, every day, against my skin that is 27% pesticide residue makes me a little queasy. Conventional Cotton also uses 25% of the world's known pesticides to farm. Today, conventional cotton farmers and laborers are 10 times more likely to develop cancer than other Americans. State Employed police and soldiers stand guard around cotton fields with guns and cannons to shoot birds, because if an animal were to land on a cotton plant, it is 100% guaranteed to have mutated offspring. By producing organic cotton clothing, we are not only helping our customer, but we are helping the world. We are attracting a brand new market to the "Green movement" by providing them, conservative young adults, with sustainable, organic clothing in traditional styles that they feel comfortable to wear. I hope that answers your question! Sorry for the long - winded reply!
